Palmetto Antennas was started in 1999 to help others get their Ham Radio License, their first radios and antennas, and how to give back while participating in their local communities. I have been interested in radio most of my life.
Just a funny story from my childhood: As I said before, I have been interested in radio most of my life. I enjoyed short wave listening early in life and experimented with various types antennas. One of my antennas "was" supported by a 10 ft piece of 1/2 inch galvanized pipe hay wired up in a tree -- till one night a wind storm blew it down across the hood of my father’s brand "spanking" new 1964 Chevy Impala. That ended my antenna "work" for awhile!!!
I got my first radio license, a Commercial Radio License, in 1970 at the age of 16. I tried several times through the years to get my Ham license, but school, work, or family got in my way. So, ham radio got put on the back burner and eventually just fell off the stove.
In 1999, one of my students, N5VNV, got some of my fellow teachers interested in getting our licenses. My first call was KD5GVL, and when I got my Amateur Extra, it changed to my current call sign of AD5AQ. Through the years I have taught and “Elmored” some 80 hams from Tech to Extra.
I am also very active in my local ham community. I am the president of the local ham radio club, The Piney Hills Amateur Radio Association, a local VE, EC of Lincoln parish, and a South Bears volunteer.
